The German metaphor Text-Bild-Schere (divergence of words and image) is of
central importance for the German theoretical and practical debate on how to
choose the words for television films. It is considered the norm that words and
image should not be poles apart. Two topics are of importance in this context:
The psychological problem of attention, and the linguistic problem of the relation
of words and images. The linguistic dimension can be explained precisely
using the theory of reference. An exemplary study of different forms of film
|
comments leads to the result that the relations between word and images are organized
according to the text-linguistic principle of the topic-comment distribution
and that their further arrangement depends on the particular form of the
genre of the film. The text of explanatory films seems to enlarge the images,
documentaries work with the divergence of words and image, and reports use
the right tension between words and image.
